Through various federal, state and local funding sources,
the TRCD runs several programs out of their South Lake Tahoe
office.
Backyard Conservation
Program
Since 1998, the Backyard Conservation Program has been working
with the USDA/Natural Resources Conservation Service to assist
private property owners to help protect Lake Tahoe one property
at a time. The BCP Program provides property owners free site
evaluations for Best Management Practices (BMPs), which includes
controlling storm water runoff and other pollutants. Property
owners can contact TRCD to get information on BMPs, native
plants, water conservation, and fertilizer management.
Watershed Coordinator
Program
A state grant from the California Department of Conservation
kicked off the TRCD's Watershed Coordinator Program in 2001.
TRCD staff facilitates monthly meetings of the Upper Truckee
Focus Watershed Group, working to get funding and projects
established in the watershed. Current projects included river
restoration, canine mitt expansion, and beaver management.
Fire Safe
Council
The TRCD Fire Safe Council Program started in the Spring of
2003. This program is working to establish non-profit status.
In the mean time, program materials are available regarding
fire defensible space around your home.
